Occupation takes decades and starts with the mind

On 7 June  and 12 June, 1958 shots were heard in the villages of Kioneli, Cyprus. The ended the lives of 12 young men but started the politics of illegal occupation 16 years before idyllic holiday island of Cyprus became Europe's only apartheid state. No one imagines it's possible. It feels like something no one, not a domestic politician nor international justice, could allow. But we've seen it happen time and time again. Palestinians are live-streaming their holocaust so the history books could not allow for any ambiguity or misrepresentation. Since 7 October 2023, the use of disproportional force, false imprisonment and brutal sieges on an already over-populated and under-resourced open concentration camp has shone a light on the politics of occupation. It did not start on 7 October, it started when Zionist pioneers started their plant ideas of a Jewish nation for Jewish people. It was accelerated after World War II when Hitler's race laws and Nazi objectives to exte...

Support for Palestinian liberation should pave the way to Cypriot unity

The language of apartheid is dominating online conversations and the news, but Cyprus’ 50-year illegal occupation is ignored and promoted as a holiday hotspot. The golden leaf thrown onto the tranquil turquoise waters of the eastern Mediterranean will be mourning 50-years of an inconvenient and bloody illegal occupation holidaymakers, profiteers and politicians would rather ignore. When you think of Cyprus, you think of Ayia Napa, year-round sunshine, clear waters,14,000 years of civilisation and the backdrop to many plays, myths, historical events and even fragrances. But Aphrodite’s birthplace is bleeding and riddled with war crimes, contravention of UN resolutions, displacement, murder and ethnic cleansing . Its scars are there for everyone to see, but no one chooses to look. The plight of the Palestinians ripples through every Cypriot as a trauma bond with one exception, no one knows or cares about Cypriot apartheid. The current genocide in Gaza has rightly set the world alight wit...

The British Army in Cyprus prove colonialism is bad

By Eleni Kyprianou While journalist Carol Malone exalted the merits of empire, the British Army confessed to war  crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan. Proving the effects of British colonialism are still being felt  globally, even in an EU member state. We’ve been bearing witness to the destruction of the Palestinian people since the Nakba in  1948, but never more so than people posting and live-streaming the war crimes committed  against them in the name of colonialism and the expansionist dream of a “Greater Israel” . Earlier in May, Netanyahu declared his plans to “seize all of Gaza” , much to the delight of Louis  Theroux’s latest interviewee in The Settlers , Daniella Weiss, who openly boasted about her  achievements as a settler-coloniser. In March 2022, as Russia launched yet another attack on Ukraine, Malone wrote in The   Express , “There's nothing that can stem our tears over the slaughter of innocents and the  bloody destruction of th...
